Preparation Timeline
Here's a month-by-month roadmap from now to launch:
Step 1 — Secure Your Console
1 Choose Your Platform
GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, 2026. The PC version is expected in early 2027. If you don't already own a current-gen console, now is the time to buy. Here's the breakdown:
- PS5 — The console Rockstar used to capture Trailer 2. Likely the "lead" development platform. Expected to offer the most polished experience at launch. Both disc and digital editions work.
- Xbox Series X — Comparable performance to PS5. The better choice if you're invested in the Xbox ecosystem and Game Pass (though GTA 6 won't be on Game Pass at launch).
- Xbox Series S — Will run GTA 6 but with reduced settings. Expect 1080p at 30fps. If budget allows, the Series X is a much better experience.
- PC — The ultimate version, but you'll wait until 2027. If you can be patient, PC offers the highest fidelity, mods, and unlocked framerates.
Step 2 — Prepare Storage
GTA 6 will be massive. Based on RDR2's 150GB install and GTA 6's larger scope, here are the expected storage requirements:
The PS5 has 667GB usable storage and the Series X has 802GB. GTA 6 alone could take 20-30% of your console's storage. Here's what to do:
- Buy an expansion SSD — PS5 supports M.2 NVMe drives (1TB or 2TB recommended). Xbox Series X|S uses the proprietary Seagate Expansion Card. Budget $80-150 for this.
- Clear space now — Delete games you haven't played in months. Move media files to external storage. You want GTA 6 on the internal SSD for fastest load times.
- External HDD for archives — Use a USB external drive to store games you're not actively playing. You can move them back to the SSD when needed (PS5 and Xbox both support this).
Step 3 — Pre-Order Strategy
3 Choose Your Edition
Based on Take-Two's pricing and Rockstar's past releases, three editions are expected:
- Standard Edition ($69.99) — The base game. Everything you need. If you're budget-conscious, this is the smart choice — all the core content is here.
- Deluxe Edition (~$99.99) — Likely includes GTA Online bonuses (starter cash, exclusive vehicles, weapons), early access to certain content, and cosmetic items. Worth it if you plan to play GTA Online heavily.
- Collector's Edition (~$149.99+) — Physical collectibles (map, art book, steelbook case), plus all Deluxe bonuses. For superfans who want shelf-worthy memorabilia.
For full edition details and scam warnings, see our Price & Pre-Order Guide.
4 Where to Pre-Order
Pre-orders are expected to open in summer 2026. When they do, here's where to buy:
- PlayStation Store — Digital. Enables preload. Instant midnight access.
- Xbox Store — Digital. Same benefits as PlayStation Store.
- Amazon — Physical. Often has release-day delivery. Easy returns if needed.
- Best Buy / GameStop — Physical. Midnight launch events at select locations for those who want the in-store experience.
- Walmart / Target — Physical. Sometimes slightly discounted with store-specific promotions.
Digital vs. physical? Digital is faster (preload + instant access at midnight), but physical gives you a tradeable disc and doesn't eat storage for the download. If you have fast internet, digital is the move for launch day.
Step 5 — Account Setup
5 Get Your Accounts Ready
Don't let account issues slow you down on launch day. Set these up now:
- Rockstar Social Club — Required for GTA Online and likely for single-player cloud saves. Create or update your account at socialclub.rockstargames.com. Link it to your console account.
- PlayStation Plus / Xbox Game Pass Core — Required for GTA 6 Online multiplayer. Make sure your subscription is active through November. PS Plus Essential ($59.99/year) or Xbox Game Pass Core ($59.99/year) are the minimum tiers needed.
- Two-factor authentication — Enable 2FA on your Rockstar, PSN, and Xbox accounts. This protects your GTA Online progress from hackers and often provides bonus in-game rewards.
- Payment method — Add a payment method to your console account now so pre-ordering is instant when the option goes live.
Step 6 — Internet Preparation
GTA 6's download will be massive. Here's how download times break down by connection speed, assuming a 130GB download:
25 Mbps
~11.5 hours
Start preload ASAP
100 Mbps
~2.9 hours
Comfortable window
300 Mbps
~58 minutes
Very manageable
1 Gbps
~17 minutes
Near instant
Tips for faster downloads:
- Use a wired Ethernet connection — Wi-Fi is slower and less reliable for large downloads. A $10 Ethernet cable is the best investment you can make.
- Download during off-peak hours — Late night and early morning when fewer people are on your network and your ISP's network.
- Pause other downloads — Stop any other downloads, streaming, or updates on your network to maximize bandwidth for GTA 6.
- Enable preload — Most digital pre-orders allow you to download the game 1-3 days before launch. This is the single most important thing you can do to play at midnight.
Step 7 — Launch Day Strategy
7 November 19, 2026 — Game Plan
- Take the day off — If your schedule allows it. Use our Day Off Calculator to plan the perfect approach.
- Avoid spoilers — Mute GTA-related keywords on social media starting a few days before launch. Reviews will drop before the street date and some players will get early copies.
- Start with story mode — GTA Online may have server issues on day one (it always does). Single player will work perfectly from minute one.
- Don't rush — Leonida is meant to be explored. Take your time with the opening hours. Drive the speed limit. Listen to the radio. Soak it in.
- Update your controller — Make sure your controller firmware is up to date. Nothing worse than a forced controller update when you're trying to play.
- Snacks and supplies — Stock up. You won't want to leave Leonida once you're in.
