Real-World History

Humans tried to weaponise fire for millennia, but the modern flamethrower — a pressurised stream of ignited fuel — is a product of the industrial age. The German inventor Richard Fiedler submitted his Flammenwerfer ("flame thrower," the source of the English word) to the German Army in 1901: a tank divided into a pressurised-gas section and a flammable-oil section, the gas forcing the oil out through a nozzle past an igniter. The army adopted the portable version in the years that followed, and by the eve of World War I had dedicated flamethrower troops.

Its battlefield debut was terrifying. German shock troops first used the portable flamethrower in a surprise dawn attack on British lines at Hooge, in Flanders, on 30 July 1915, and again at Verdun in 1916. Two main types emerged: the man-portable Kleinflammenwerfer ("Kleif"), with a backpack tank and a lance, effective out to roughly 20–30 yards; and the much larger trench-based Grossflammenwerfer ("Grof"), too heavy to carry but able to throw fire far further via a long hose. Despite the "one-man weapon" image, these were team-operated — often four-man squads. The flamethrower's real legacy is psychological: its direct casualties were relatively limited, but the sight of directed fire demoralised entrenched troops out of all proportion to the bodies it caused — the same dread it trades on as a video-game weapon.
