GTA 6 MISSIONS

Story structure, dual protagonist gameplay, heist planning, side missions, and everything we know about GTA 6's mission design.

LAST UPDATED: APRIL 2026 · BASED ON OFFICIAL REVEALS + CREDIBLE LEAKS

⚠️ Pre-release page. GTA 6 hasn't launched yet. This page combines officially confirmed details from Rockstar's trailers and communications with credible leaks and informed analysis. Everything unconfirmed is clearly labeled. We'll update this page as new information is revealed.

Mission Structure Overview

GTA 6 is built around the story of Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos — a criminal duo inspired by Bonnie and Clyde navigating the underworld of Leonida, the game's fictional take on Florida with Vice City at its center.

The shift from GTA V's three protagonists to two signals a deliberate move by Rockstar toward narrative depth over breadth. Rather than splitting attention across three loosely connected storylines, GTA 6 focuses on a single, emotionally charged partnership — closer in tone to Red Dead Redemption 2's focused storytelling than GTA V's satirical sprawl.

Dual Protagonist Switching

Building on GTA V's character-switching system, GTA 6 evolves the mechanic in several key ways:

🔄

Instant Switching

When Jason and Lucia are together, switching is near-instantaneous — no zoom-out animation. The camera stays tight on the action.

🎯

Tactical Commands

Order your partner to provide cover fire, crack a safe, drive the getaway car, or hold a position while you flank.

🎒

Shared Inventory

Weapons and items can be passed between characters in real-time during missions and free roam.

According to credible leak sources, the character wheel has three modes: Solo Jason, Solo Lucia, and Dual Protagonist Control — where both characters operate together for robberies and cooperative missions in the open world. Some story missions require both characters simultaneously.

Speculated Story Structure

While Rockstar hasn't confirmed chapter or act structure, credible leak sources and trailer analysis suggest the story follows a multi-chapter arc. The 2022 leak referenced five story chapters, and the narrative arc visible in both trailers supports a rise-and-fall structure similar to classic crime dramas.

I

The Setup — Meeting & Early Crime

Jason collects Lucia from prison (shown in Trailer 1). Their partnership begins with small-scale jobs — convenience store robberies, car theft, low-level hustling in Vice City's underbelly. The tutorial and early missions likely live here.

II

The Rise — Building a Reputation

The duo takes on bigger scores and attracts attention from Vice City's criminal hierarchy. Heist missions become available. The relationship between Jason and Lucia deepens, and the player begins to see the world through both perspectives.

III

The Network — Expanding Territory

Missions extend across Leonida's regions — from Vice City into the Grassrivers, Leonida Keys, and beyond. The duo builds connections with cartels, corrupt officials, and rival crews. Side businesses and properties likely become available.

IV

The Pressure — Heat & Betrayal

Law enforcement closes in. The wanted system intensifies. Alliances fracture. The relationship between Jason and Lucia is tested. Multi-protagonist missions become more complex, with higher stakes and harder choices.

V

The Reckoning — Climax & Resolution

The final heist. The ultimate confrontation. Based on Rockstar's history with RDR2 and GTA V, expect multiple endings or at least a dramatically branching final act. The Bonnie-and-Clyde inspiration suggests this won't end clean.

Note: This chapter structure is speculative, based on leaked information and narrative analysis. Rockstar has not officially confirmed story chapters.

Mission Types

📋

Story Missions

The main narrative arc following Jason and Lucia. Based on GTA V's ~69 story missions and RDR2's ~104, expect somewhere in the range of 70–100 main missions. Character switching will be integral — some missions lock you to one protagonist, others require both.

💎

Heist Missions

GTA V's heists were a standout feature. GTA 6 is expected to expand on them significantly with more planning options, approach variations, and crew management. The dual protagonist system adds a new tactical dimension — assign Jason and Lucia to different roles during the planning phase. Read more on our Heists page.

Dynamic Robberies

Beyond scripted heists, GTA 6 reportedly features open-world robberies that can be initiated at will. Hold up stores, hit armored trucks, rob houses — all with real-time tactical decisions. If a witness sees Lucia's face but not Jason's, consequences follow Lucia specifically. NPC memory is reportedly a factor.

🎭

Side Missions & Stranger Encounters

Expect RDR2-style stranger missions with multi-step questlines, plus GTA V-style Strangers and Freaks encounters. The open world will feature unique NPCs with their own stories that play out across multiple encounters over time. Some side missions may be protagonist-specific.

LIKELY

Random Events

Dynamic world events that occur organically — crimes in progress, accidents, NPC conflicts, police chases, and environmental emergencies. RDR2 pioneered this system; GTA 6 is expected to expand it significantly with Vice City's dense urban environment offering more encounter types.

🏠

Property & Business Missions

GTA V let you buy businesses that generated passive income. GTA 6 is expected to expand this with manageable properties across Leonida — nightclubs, dealerships, boat rentals, and more. Each property chain likely has its own mission set for acquisition and management.

🏎️

Races & Vehicle Challenges

Street races, boat races, air races — a GTA staple. With GTA 6's reported overhaul of vehicle physics and a vehicle roster that includes everything from airboats to supercars, expect a robust racing side-activity system. Leonida's diverse terrain (swamps, highways, coastline) provides natural variety.

LIKELY
🎣

Activities & Mini-Games

Golf, tennis, darts, fishing, hunting, and more. RDR2 featured an enormous range of activities; GTA 6 set in Florida opens the door to water sports, wildlife encounters, gambling, and nightlife activities. See our full breakdown on the Activities page (coming soon).

Mission Design Philosophy

Rockstar's mission design has evolved significantly across their last few titles. Here's how GTA 6 is expected to push things forward:

More Player Agency

GTA V's missions were often criticized for being too linear — follow the yellow route, trigger the cutscene, shoot the guys. RDR2 improved on this but still had rigid mission structures. GTA 6 is expected to offer more approach freedom, particularly in heist missions where multiple entry points, disguise options, and tactical choices change how the mission plays out.

Protagonist-Dependent Outcomes

Certain missions reportedly play differently depending on which protagonist you control. Jason's military background may offer combat-heavy solutions, while Lucia's street smarts open up stealth and social engineering options. Voice lines and NPC reactions adapt to which character leads, adding replay value.

Consequence Systems

NPCs reportedly have memory systems. If you rob a store with Lucia, that store owner recognizes her. If a witness escapes during a crime, law enforcement uses their description. The evolved wanted system feeds into mission design by making player actions in the open world affect mission availability and difficulty.

Estimated Story Length

Based on Rockstar's previous titles and the scope of GTA 6's world, here's what we estimate:

GAMESTORY MISSIONSMAIN STORY LENGTH100% COMPLETION
GTA V (2013)69~31 hours~79 hours
RDR2 (2018)104~49 hours~180 hours
GTA 6 (2026)~80–100 (est.)~40–55 hours (est.)~120–200 hours (est.)

For a deeper analysis, see our GTA 6 Story Length breakdown. The dual protagonist system and the density of Leonida's open world suggest this will be Rockstar's longest GTA game, though likely not surpassing RDR2's leisurely pacing.

From Story to Online

GTA V's story mode served as a springboard to GTA Online, which became one of the most profitable entertainment products ever made. GTA 6 will almost certainly follow a similar pattern, with the story mode establishing characters, locations, and systems that the online component then expands upon.

Whether GTA 6 Online launches alongside the story or arrives separately (as GTA Online did two weeks after GTA V) remains unconfirmed. Either way, the mission design lessons from the single-player experience will directly inform cooperative heists and multiplayer activities in Online.

Mission Replay & Gold Medals

Both GTA V and RDR2 featured mission replay systems with optional objectives for gold medal completion. GTA 6 is almost certainly going to include a similar system. Optional objectives typically involve completing missions under time limits, achieving specific accuracy percentages, or performing unique actions during set pieces. Combined with the dual-protagonist system, this adds significant replay value — try the mission as Jason first, then replay as Lucia for a different experience.
