Why Cayo Still Wins
The Cayo Perico Heist launched in December 2020 and immediately broke the GTA Online economy. Five years and several Rockstar nerfs later, it remains the best solo money method in the game. A clean Cayo Perico run banks roughly $1.5M–$2M in 45–60 minutes, requires no crew coordination, no public lobby risk, and tolerates significant player error without ruining the run.
The competitive landscape has shifted around it. The Acid Lab is now the best business per hour. The Nightclub is the best passive income. The Dr. Dre VIP Contract pays roughly $1M per hour with less setup time. But for raw single-mission payout — the kind of money that buys you a Nightclub or a Bunker in one sitting — Cayo Perico is still unmatched. New players prioritizing big purchases should start here.
The 2024 cooldown adjustments mean you can't spam it back-to-back like 2021. You need a 48-minute cooldown between hard-mode runs, or 144 minutes between full-payout standard runs. Plan accordingly — Cayo Perico works best as the centerpiece of a rotation, not the only thing you do.
Requirements & Setup Cost
The mandatory purchase: Kosatka submarine. Base price $2,200,000 from Warstock Cache & Carry. This is the only way to start the heist. You can run the heist without any Kosatka upgrades, but if you plan to grind Cayo Perico more than ten times, the Sparrow helicopter add-on ($1.815M discounted, $1.815M list) is essential — it parks at the front of the sub and saves 5–8 minutes per run on traversal alone.
Recommended Kosatka additions: Sparrow helicopter (essential), Weapon Workshop ($350K — lets you customize loadouts from the sub), Sonar Station ($1.2M — quality of life, not required). Skip the missile launcher and the Kraken submersible unless you specifically want them for other content.
Total recommended buy-in: ~$4.4M. If you don't have $4.4M cash on hand, you can run the heist with just the base Kosatka. The first heist will pay for the Sparrow and Workshop. Subsequent heists fund everything else.
The Scoping Mission
The heist begins with a single scoping mission — you fly to the island in a Velum aircraft (auto-supplied), parachute in, photograph intel points, escape on a stolen boat. This scoping run determines what your heist looks like:
- Primary target: The most important choice. Photograph EVERY potential primary in the compound office (it cycles). The Panther Statue ($1.9M solo, only available during specific events) is the goal when it's up. Pink Diamond and Madrazo Files are reliable fallbacks ($1.3M–$1.4M solo).
- Compound entry points: Photograph the main gate, side fence cuts, drainage tunnel, and the air vent on the north wall. The drainage tunnel is the meta solo entry — quiet, fast, low risk.
- Approach vehicles: Photograph at least 2-3 to give yourself options. The Velum, Longfin, and Kosatka all work; Longfin is best for hauling secondary loot.
- Weapons stash: Photograph the dirt mound. Required for the suppressed Combat Pistol that makes stealth viable.
- Bolt cutters & grappling equipment: Always photograph the locations near the airstrip and near the docks.
One thorough scope eliminates the need for re-scoping. The mission takes 15-20 minutes if you're careful, less if you know the layout cold.
Prep Missions Strategy
After scoping, you run prep missions to collect approach vehicle, weapons, and any required equipment based on your scoped intel. The meta solo route is:
- Pavel cut: Free first run, then $25K per heist after
- Approach vehicle: Choose Kosatka submarine approach if available (drops you closest to the drainage tunnel). Longfin if you're hauling gold/cocaine as secondaries.
- Compound entry: Drainage tunnel if scoped, side fence cut otherwise. The drainage tunnel run is 95%+ success rate solo.
- Skip optional preps: Plasma cutter, fingerprint cloner, safe code — only needed if you're going for high-value secondary loot. Solo runners chasing speed should skip these.
Total prep time: 30-45 minutes the first run, 20-30 minutes once you know the routes. Each prep mission is freeroam — you can do them in solo public sessions to avoid griefers.
The Finale — Solo Route
Solo Cayo Perico finale, drainage tunnel approach, optimized route:
- Drop into the drainage tunnel from the Kosatka. Hit the bolt-cutter point at the gate first.
- Sprint to the compound. Take down the two guards at the back-fence cut. Use suppressed pistol — no detection.
- Enter the compound through the side. Take down the patrolling guard near the office building.
- Enter the basement directly — the primary target is in the office above, but the basement has up to $300K in cash that takes 90 seconds to grab.
- Stairs to office. Take out the El Rubio bodyguard. Grab the primary target.
- Exit through the office balcony, drop to ground level, sprint to the south fence cut.
- Mount your scoped approach vehicle. Drive to the extraction point. Submarine extraction is fastest.
Elite Challenge: Complete the finale in under 15 minutes (achievable solo with practice). Awards +$100K cash bonus on top of the primary payout. Hit this consistently and Cayo pays $1.6M+ per run.
Payouts by Target
Primary target payouts (solo, base values, before secondary loot and Elite Challenge):
- Panther Statue: $1.9M (event only, rare appearance)
- Sinsimito Tequila: $900K
- Ruby Necklace: $1M
- Bearer Bonds: $1.1M
- Pink Diamond: $1.3M
- Madrazo Files: $1.1M (forced primary on first run)
Secondary loot bag (carried during the finale): Up to $500K additional. Priorities: gold ($330K bag value, slow run speed) > cocaine ($220K bag value, normal run speed) > weed/cash ($110-150K bag value). Solo players usually skip gold because the run-speed penalty makes detection more likely.
The Cayo cut: Pavel takes 10% off the top. The number you see in the menu is post-cut. Don't panic when the haul appears smaller than the primary target value.
The Optimal Grind Loop
The Cayo Perico cooldown means you can't just run it back-to-back. The professional grind loop interleaves Cayo with other activities so you're always earning while waiting for the cooldown.
2-hour Cayo session structure:
- 00:00: Resupply Acid Lab ($25K supply purchase, starts producing)
- 00:05: Run a Nightclub daily safe collection if available ($50K)
- 00:10: Start Cayo Perico finale — drainage tunnel route
- 00:40: Cayo Perico cashes out — $1.5M+
- 00:45: Acid Lab sale mission — $300K solo, no griefers in invite-only
- 01:00: Payphone Hit — $85K, ~10 minutes
- 01:15: Bunker check — buy supplies if needed
- 01:20: Start Cayo Perico scoping for next heist
- 01:50: Run setup preps
- 02:00: Ready for finale #2
Expected 3-hour session haul: $3.5M–$5M depending on Elite Challenge hit rate and weekly bonuses. This is the most efficient solo grind in the game.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Is the Cayo Perico Heist still the best money method in 2026?
For raw single-mission payout, yes. Cayo Perico still earns $1.5M+ solo in under an hour, making it the highest single-mission payout in the game. For dollars-per-hour, the Acid Lab and Dr. Dre VIP Contract are now competitive. Most efficient players rotate Cayo Perico with these other methods.
Can I do Cayo Perico solo?
Yes — Cayo Perico is the only heist in GTA Online fully completable solo, from scoping to finale. Rockstar designed it specifically for solo play. No crew required.
What's the cooldown between Cayo Perico runs?
48 minutes between hard-mode runs (slightly higher difficulty, lower payout — about 25% reduction). 144 minutes between standard-difficulty back-to-back runs to get full payout. Best practice is to do other activities during the cooldown rather than wait.
Do I really need the Sparrow helicopter?
For one or two heists, no. For grinding it consistently, yes — the Sparrow saves 5-8 minutes per run on traversal, which compounds across dozens of runs. The Sparrow pays for itself in about three heists.
Is the Panther Statue still available?
The Panther Statue ($1.9M primary) is only available during specific Rockstar event weeks. Check the official Rockstar Newswire for current event status. When it's up, it becomes the dominant primary target — clear your weekend.
