GTA TIMELINE

29 years of Grand Theft Auto — every game, every milestone, from 1997 to GTA 6.

THE 2D ERA (1997-1999)
1997

Grand Theft Auto

The one that started it all. Top-down open-world action across Liberty City, Vice City, and San Andreas. Developed by DMA Design (now Rockstar North) in Edinburgh, Scotland. Controversially marketed, instantly iconic.

GTA: London 1969 & London 1961

Expansion packs set in London — the only GTA games set outside the US. Mod-culture vibes, British humor, and a very different atmosphere from the American settings.

Grand Theft Auto 2

Set in a retro-futuristic "Anywhere City." Introduced gang respect systems and missions for multiple factions. Last top-down entry before the 3D revolution.

THE 3D UNIVERSE (2001-2006)

Grand Theft Auto III

The game that changed everything. First 3D open-world GTA, set in Liberty City. Introduced the template every open-world game would follow: a living, breathing city with radio stations, pedestrians, and total freedom. Sold 14.5 million copies and defined the PS2 era.

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City

The 1980s masterpiece. Miami-inspired Vice City, Tommy Vercetti, and the greatest video game soundtrack ever assembled. Defined the pop-culture crossover potential of video games. GTA 6 returns to Vice City 24 years later.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas

The most ambitious PS2 game ever. Three cities (Los Santos, San Fierro, Las Venturas), RPG elements, gang territory, and CJ's journey from the hood to the top. 27.5 million copies sold. Still considered by many to be the best GTA ever made.
