Whether you can own and run one for income in GTA 6 is the unconfirmed leap; the tiki-bar tradition it draws on is one of Florida’s most genuine and well-documented contributions to American pop culture.

An open-air bar on the sand is one of the defining images of the Florida coastline, and Vice City’s confirmed beachfront is built to evoke exactly that. The appeal is scenery first: tiki torches, palm thatch and tropical cocktails are part of the visual language Rockstar is working in. The business layer is the speculative part — a tiki bar as set dressing is a sure thing; a tiki bar as an ownable enterprise is not.

Bars and Nightlife in GTA

Bars have always populated the GTA world as venues and story stages — places you walk into, drink at, brawl in, or meet a contact — and GTA V even let the protagonists get drunk and stumble home. What the series has not historically done is hand the player a bar to operate. The closest the franchise has come to ownable nightlife is the Nightclub business introduced in GTA Online’s 2018 After Hours update — a large club, not a beach shack, and a different animal from a tiki bar on the sand. A standalone, income-generating beach bar would be an extension of that idea rather than a return of an existing feature.

Florida’s Real Tiki Tradition

The beach bar is not just a vibe Rockstar can borrow — it is a real Florida institution with a traceable history. American tiki culture began in 1933 when Ernest Gantt opened Don the Beachcomber in Hollywood, California, pairing rum cocktails with Polynesian-themed décor. The craze spread east after World War II, carried partly by returning servicemen with South Pacific stories, and Florida became one of its strongholds: the Bahi Hut opened in Sarasota in 1954, often cited as the state’s oldest tiki bar.

The grand statement came two years later. On December 28, 1956, Chicago brothers Bob and Jack Thornton opened the Mai-Kai in Fort Lauderdale — reportedly the most expensive restaurant built in the country that year — with multiple themed dining rooms, tropical gardens with waterfalls, and a Polynesian floor show that became the longest-running of its kind in the United States. Its cocktail program, built by Don the Beachcomber alumnus Mariano Licudine, drew a celebrity crowd for decades. After hurricane and storm damage forced a years-long closure, the Mai-Kai reopened in late 2024 following a roughly $20 million restoration — proof of how deep the attachment runs.

That is the lineage a Leonida beach bar would tap: not a generic “tropical” backdrop, but a specific, century-spanning Florida tradition of rum, thatch and escapism. The in-game ownable version is unconfirmed; the cultural roots are entirely real.
