Overview

A houseboat — a home that is also a vessel, or at least a dwelling that floats — is one of the more atmospheric property ideas for a region built on the Florida Keys, where living on or over the water is a genuine way of life rather than a novelty. Rockstar has shown nothing like an ownable liveaboard for GTA 6, so it stays a fan concept. But South Florida hands this page an unusually rich real-world backstory, including a near-legendary offshore community that the GTA version of the region would feel right at home beside.

Why It Fits the Leonida Keys

Living over the water is real, documented Florida culture, not a stretch: Key West has a long-standing liveaboard scene of people who make boats their permanent homes, and Biscayne Bay once hosted an entire offshore village on stilts. A floating home in the Leonida Keys would be drawing on that, which is what makes it feel setting-true even though the ownable property itself is unconfirmed.

GTA 6 Status — Expected, Not Confirmed

No houseboat, liveaboard, or floating-home property has appeared in GTA 6 material, and Rockstar has published no property list or prices. The sections below draw only on confirmed franchise history and documented Florida history — any berth fee, tier, or price attached to this idea elsewhere is fan speculation.

Floating Homes in GTA

Boats have always dressed GTA’s waterways, and moored vessels appear as scenery and the occasional mission setting, but a houseboat you live in has not been a property type. The nearest precedent is GTA Online’s Galaxy Super Yacht (2015), which functions as a moored, staffed floating apartment — confirming Rockstar will treat a vessel as a residence, but at the superyacht end rather than the scruffy liveaboard end. A modest houseboat-as-home would be a new flavour of an idea the series has already proven it likes, not a returning feature.

Stiltsville and the Liveaboard Tradition

The standout real-world story is Stiltsville — a cluster of wooden houses built directly on the shallow flats of Biscayne Bay, about a mile off Key Biscayne. It began in the 1930s when a man known as “Crawfish Eddie” Walker put up a shack on stilts a mile offshore, far enough out to sit beyond the jurisdiction that banned gambling on land. Bait-and-beer stands gave way to private social clubs — the Calvert Club, and later the notorious Bikini Club — and by 1960 there were around 27 structures out on the water, a genuinely strange offshore playground for Miami’s well-connected.

The bay was unforgiving. Hurricanes (Betsy in 1965, and the catastrophic Andrew in 1992) and fires whittled the community down, and only seven houses survived into the modern era — now protected within Biscayne National Park and looked after by the Stiltsville Trust, reachable today only by boat. Strictly speaking Stiltsville sits in Biscayne Bay rather than the Keys proper, and a true “houseboat” floats while Stiltsville stands on pilings — but the spirit is identical: a deliberate choice to make a home out on the water, half-escape and half-statement.

That spirit is alive in the Keys too, where Key West in particular has a durable liveaboard community of people whose permanent address is a boat. Between Stiltsville’s history and Key West’s present, a floating home in Leonida would be one of the most authentically Floridian property ideas on this site — even if Rockstar hasn’t confirmed you can own one.
