Pre-Order Scams & Fakes

The Current Threat Environment

GTA 6 pre-orders have not opened anywhere. Anyone telling you otherwise — through a website, social media DM, Discord server, YouTube comment, Reddit thread, or email — is wrong, mistaken, or running a scam. The May 17 Best Buy leak prompted what Beebom and GameSpot both described as "fake pre-order hype" — and Take-Two's stock price actually dropped 4% in reaction to fake pre-order news.

The threat environment has three tiers. First, fake listing sites that imitate retailer storefronts and accept payment for a product that doesn't exist yet. Second, discount key resellers like G2A, Kinguin, Eneba, and similar sites listing unreleased AAA games — which are either selling stolen credit-card-purchased keys or running outright fraud. Third, social-engineering scams in DMs, comments, and unofficial Discord servers offering "early access," "exclusive pre-order codes," or "limited-time pricing" on a product Rockstar hasn't priced.

All three tiers will accelerate as the actual pre-order date approaches. The day Rockstar opens legitimate pre-orders is the same day scam volume spikes — fake listings will harvest panicked buyers who fail to verify the URL.

The Verified Legitimate Sources

When Rockstar opens pre-orders, the listing will appear on these sources and only these sources:

  • PlayStation Store — directly via your PS5 console or store.playstation.com
  • Xbox Store / Microsoft Store — directly via your Xbox Series X|S console or xbox.com
  • Rockstar Games official site — rockstargames.com or the Rockstar Games Launcher (for any future PC version)
  • Amazon — amazon.com (and regional equivalents: amazon.co.uk, amazon.de, etc.)
  • GameStop — gamestop.com
  • Best Buy — bestbuy.com
  • Walmart — walmart.com
  • Regional retailers: Argos UK, GAME UK, ShopTo UK, Currys UK, JB Hi-Fi AU, EB Games AU/NZ — all directly via their official .co.uk / .com.au domains

If you see a pre-order listing anywhere else, it isn't legitimate. Full stop. No exceptions. There is no special retailer running an exclusive early pre-order for GTA 6.

Why Key Resellers Are a Trap

Sites like G2A, Kinguin, Eneba, CDKeys, and similar discount key marketplaces sometimes list AAA titles before their official launch date. The mechanic is simple: third-party sellers list keys they claim to have access to, the marketplace takes a cut, the buyer pays, and the key is delivered electronically.

For unreleased AAA games like GTA 6 right now, this is functionally impossible to do legitimately. Rockstar has not opened wholesale key distribution. There are no legitimate keys for sale because Rockstar hasn't generated them yet. Listings that exist are one of three things: (1) keys stolen from compromised credit cards in other regions, which Rockstar will deactivate once the fraud is detected, (2) outright fraud where no key is delivered, (3) speculative listings designed to capture buyer commitment that the seller plans to fulfill later by some other method.

The CDKeys / G2A model works (legally) for back-catalog titles where regional pricing differences create arbitrage opportunities. It does not work for first-week AAA launches. Anyone selling GTA 6 pre-orders through a discount key site right now is selling something that doesn't legally exist yet.

Specific Scam Patterns to Recognize

The "limited-time pre-order" Twitter/X DM. An account follows you, DMs offering early access or discount pre-orders, links to a payment processor or PayPal. Pattern: Rockstar doesn't sell through DMs. Block and report.

The Discord "insider" with leaked codes. A Discord member claims to have early access codes, offers them for sale via crypto or gift card. Pattern: leaked codes don't exist, and even if they did, no one selling them would do so for an Amazon gift card. Ignore.

The "GTA 6 pre-order" Google Ad. A sponsored Google search result links to a domain that mimics a legitimate retailer (gta6-preorder.com, gta6-buy.net, gta6-rockstar.shop). Pattern: legitimate retailers don't use these domains. Always verify the URL matches the retailer's main domain (rockstargames.com, gamestop.com, etc.) — not a subdomain or lookalike.

The Etsy / eBay / Mercari "digital code" listing. A seller offers a digital GTA 6 code for $40–60, claiming early access through a contact. Pattern: marketplaces don't have legitimate access to pre-release AAA codes. The code, if delivered at all, will be deactivated by Rockstar.

The fake retailer email. An email arriving in your inbox claiming a special pre-order from Best Buy, GameStop, or Amazon, with a link to a payment page. Pattern: verify the sender domain matches the retailer exactly. Phishing emails use lookalike domains (bestbuy-deals.com, gamestop-store.net) that look real at a glance. Click only links you can verify, and never enter payment information from an email link — go to the retailer's own site directly.

The Urgency Trap

Every scam plays on urgency. "Only 50 codes left." "Pre-order closing in 3 hours." "This price will never be offered again." These tactics work because legitimate pre-order launches genuinely do have time pressure on Collector's Edition allocations — and scammers know buyers are conditioned to act fast.

The defense: when Rockstar opens legitimate pre-orders, you'll have hours to confirm the URL, verify the payment is going to the right place, and complete the transaction calmly. Collector's Edition allocations may sell out within hours but standard edition pre-orders won't sell out at all. You don't need to rush.

If a listing claims to expire in minutes, it's almost certainly a scam. The only legitimate "limited time" pressure on pre-order day will be on the Collector's Edition tier, and that will be visible directly on the legitimate retailer sites listed above — never through a third-party storefront, DM, or email.

How to Verify a Legitimate Listing

When pre-orders open and you're ready to buy, three quick checks confirm legitimacy.

First, the URL. The address bar should match the retailer's primary domain exactly. PSN listings are at store.playstation.com. Xbox listings are at xbox.com or microsoft.com. Rockstar's storefront is at rockstargames.com. Amazon is at amazon.com (or your regional version). Any domain that isn't one of these — even if the page looks identical to a real retailer — is fake.

Second, cross-reference. If a pre-order has opened, the listing will exist on multiple legitimate retailers simultaneously. Check at least two before purchasing. If only one site shows the listing and the others don't, the one site is fake.

Third, verify Rockstar. The single ground-truth source is the official Rockstar Newswire (rockstargames.com/newswire). Rockstar will post pre-order announcements there. If the Newswire is silent and a third-party site is selling pre-orders, the third-party site is wrong.

Status: Threat environment current as of May 19, 2026. As the actual pre-order date approaches, scam volume will increase. The legitimate retailer list and verification checks in this article will remain accurate — always cross-reference at least two legitimate sources before pre-ordering.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Are GTA 6 pre-orders available right now?

No. As of May 19, 2026, Rockstar has not opened pre-orders anywhere. Any site claiming to offer GTA 6 pre-orders right now is not legitimate.

Can I buy GTA 6 from G2A, Kinguin, or CDKeys before launch?

No. These discount key resellers do not have legitimate access to unreleased AAA game keys. Listings that appear are either fraudulent or selling keys obtained through compromised payment methods that Rockstar will deactivate.

How do I verify a legitimate GTA 6 pre-order listing?

Verify three things: (1) the URL matches the retailer's primary domain exactly, (2) the listing exists on at least two legitimate retailers simultaneously, (3) the official Rockstar Newswire (rockstargames.com/newswire) has announced pre-orders are open.

What should I do if I see a GTA 6 pre-order on social media?

Ignore it. Rockstar does not sell pre-orders through social media DMs, Discord servers, Twitter/X accounts, or YouTube comments. Block accounts that DM you offering pre-orders and report them to the platform.

Will the real pre-order site look exactly like a fake?

Possibly. Phishing sites can mimic legitimate retailers convincingly. Always verify the URL in your browser's address bar — it should match the retailer's main domain (rockstargames.com, gamestop.com, etc.) exactly, not a lookalike (rockstar-store.com, gamestop-deals.net).

What's the safest way to pre-order GTA 6 when pre-orders open?

Open the retailer's main website directly (type the URL or use a bookmark — don't follow links from emails or social media). Cross-reference the listing on a second legitimate retailer. Verify the announcement on the official Rockstar Newswire. Then complete the transaction calmly — standard edition won't sell out, and Collector's Edition will have hours of availability.
